IN XANADU. A Quest

Author: William Dalrypmple.

Genre: Travelogue.

Rating:  4.5⭐

Xanadu, now Shangdu, is located in Inner Mongolia, northern China. It was the first capital and the summer capital of the Mongol Empire in the 1263. Xanadu was famous for its palaces, gardens and waterways and was Kublai Khan’s favourite summer palace.

Kublai Khan was the grandson of Genghis Khan and the founder of the Yuan Dynasty in the 13th century China. He was the ruler of the Mongol Empire for 30 yrs. During his reign, Xanadu flourished, making it one of the richest kingdoms. After Kublai Khan’s death, however, Yuan Dynasty started to decline, thus changing the face of the once prosperous city to shambles. Xanadu was believed to be so beautiful, that ‘Xanadu’ term is still used as a metaphor for opulence or an idyllic place.

In 1270s Marco Polo, a Venetian merchant, explorer and a writer travelled along the Silk Route with his father and his uncle and reached Xanadu where he served the court of Kublai Khan for 17 years. Though he was not the first European to reach China, Marco Polo was the first to leave a detailed chronicle of his experience. His travel book inspired Christopher Columbus and many other travellers. Author and his companions are one of the many who decided to retake this path once taken 7 centuries back. They started from Jerusalem to reach a tedious route with multiple ethenic diversities, landscapes and overcame diplomatic complications, struggled for basic comfort to finally reach Xanadu. This travelogue takes us through two timelines, 1270s and 1980s with the glimpse of the history compared to the present . He has collated his observations with that of Marco Polos, adding his own version about the aspects which were either not present or overlooked by the later.

It does take a moment to get into the book if you don’t know the background of the topic. I had to do my own research to understand the scene. Nevertheless, it improved my knowledge and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this hilarious travelogue. It has its ups and downs but never a dull moment.

Summer 00s

Every year when the summer season comes, it constantly reminds me of my childhood days, and I feel nostalgic about the Summer 00s. To share my glimpse of childhood, I would like to share how I spent one of the summer days.

Listening to birds chirping, playing in the sea, making sand castles, and playing with dad and siblings was a wonderful memory. Later after coming home, we all are exhausted just from looking at the hot scorching sun; I have decided not to step out of the house. I switched on the fan and lay flat on the floor with an ice bar in hand. Mom called me to help her get the fryums sundried on the terrace. Lazily I got up and went to her with a sulking face, then she said, “Meri laadli, I will give you cool mango juice if you help me” by listening to the word mango, I decided to help her with her chores on the terrace.

After one hour, its 1 pm, and one of my favorite summer past time in the afternoon was watching TV. Especially I watch Looney tunes, Mickey & friends, popeye, Oswald, Pengu, Ben 10, Tom & Jerry, Pink Panther, Angry Birds, and The Powerpuff Girls. Well, after watching all these serials, it would be 4:30 pm. As the sun starts to set down, now I wish to go out with my bicycle, to play outside. Once I reach the park, I am fond of playing with the puppies around the park corner, and then I like to play on the swing with my friends. After getting tired of playing around, I reached home and ate the food cooked by my mom and listened to my grandma’s stories, and I would sleep.

Life was effortless during my childhood. My only worry was the homework and being scared of the Maths subject.

Now, I would not complain that my life has become challenging, but it has changed into complete grown-up life: studies, jobs, bills to pay, and attending get-togethers (not a fun business). But, once in a while, everyone should take time to appreciate the little things around them, keep more in touch with the environment, and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Just not me; many people miss their childhood and wish to relive it again. Right now, mental stress has become a new unseen pandemic in today’s generation. Every person has a trigger point for their youth and wants to share it with others. I want to give them a place to share their childhood memories and make it a #summer 00s part of my blog; they are free to upload or comment on the blog about the best memory of their childhood.

Bookname: Love Is Forever, If It’s True.

Author: Shahjad Khan.

Short story. (108 pages)

Raghav, a rich casanova, is scarred from his past. But when he falls in love with his college-mate Trisha, daughter of an orthodox middle class family, he decides to mend his ways. But soon he discovers a damning truth about her family which shatters his faith in love once again. Are they destined to be together or their love wasn’t true enough?

On the other hand, Trisha’s best friend Naisha has similar interests as Raghav’s. But when she meets Rohan, a simple boy from her college, she decides to settle down with him. But their love develops a deep crack when their faith in each other starts to dwindle.

This is a short college romance story of two couples and their journey of faith, love & heartbreak. Though the plot was good, I felt it needed editing. The narration was dry and it had a few grammatical and punctuation errors. It has drama but lacks conviction. It could be a warm story about unconditional love if it is spaced out and mildly modified

The Cindrella of Karnal by Reecha Agarwal Goyal.Book review

Divya is cursed as an “inauspicious” since birth. Raised by her orthodox, paternal family and a single mother, she runs away from her home in Karnal to study Psychology. Here she befriends Ved and Kanika who become her lifeline. She finds herself amongst her trusted and supportive friends who become more than her family. But when has life been easy for Divya!

Life takes an upturn where she finds herself in a devastating web of social injustice and abuse, patriarchy, social discrimination. Will she be able to find herself once again? Will she be able to make her mother proud? Will she be able to fullfill her dream to help the people in Karnal with their emotional and psychological issues?

“Cindrella of Karnal” is a fast paced psychological thriller focusing on women centric social issues like female infanticide, molestation, sexual and mental harrasment, injustice towards single mothers and daughters and so much more. The suffering of women, physically and mentally, from an orthodox and dominating society is decribed very well. The story started smoothly but the unexpected twist midway was surprising. The second half of the book is gripping.

This short power-packed inspirational story of a run-way girl and her fight against all odds, is highly recommended to those who like to read woman centric psychological thrillers. This is not a Cinderella retelling, but an new story altogether.

About the book:

#Qotd : Did you like the cover and the topic of the book?

‘What do you see’ is the story about the racism that Cassius faces in school which breaks his moral so much that he decides to not go to school at all. It is about how his mother motivates him to look at himself differently and face such situations with a different perspective as life for ‘them’ is not easy.

By them, here she means “black people”. It is appalling to see how children in school bully others for their skin colour. I am sure they don’t even know what that means. Why do they tease then!? They hear grownups tease others & children follow them blindly, don’t they? Irrespective of the colour, I am sure there are countless Cassius’s who face these racial injustice at such a tender age and sadly they do not even have that emotional maturity to deal with it. This book shows the first step to face such situations. It asks them to look at themselves in the mirror and appreciate what they see.

Honestly, I am impressed by the quality of the children’s stories that have evolved with time. Story books like these teach not just behavioural moral values but also deal with the emotional turmoil of the children. I remember during my childhood such deep, emotionally uplifting stories were hardly available.

Apart from the usual fairytales, such stories are extremely important for today’s kids to read, as they need to learn to fight back and know their self worth. This book is a gentle reminder with a powerful message to all the children that they are more than what they are superficially.

Needless to say, this book is a must have in every home with a child, irrespective of the colour of their skin. Because it is essential that both, the children who bully and those who get bullied read this book.

#Qotd : What do you think of the cover? Would you like to read the “shoetry”?

“I had many affairs
She had one
She forgave me for all
I forgave her for none”

– Hurt: one of my favourite poems from the book. 🦋

“Fireflies at 3am” is a shoetry i.e. a one of a kind combination of short stories and poetry.

There are around 83 poems with each having unique illustrations. Some of which have short anecdotal stories along with it which are relatable and thought-provoking.

These poems are about sacrifices, beliefs, feelings, insecurities, self pride and righteousness, mental, emotional & physical abuse and much more.

The poems describe variables of human nature which are human yet inhuman, humourous yet satirical, superficial yet deep, anecdotal yet ironic, selfless yet selfish, racist and sexist.

The author has touched the chord of the deepest anguish, jealousy, love, hurt and agony perfectly in very few words. Some peoms are very short but decribe the ocean of emotions. I read this shoetry twice just to embrace the warmth it gave me while reading it.

I recommend this book not only to all the poetry lovers but also to the beginniners. The style is easy, quirky and will not disappoint.

“… And they lived happily ever after
Once upon a time” ..

LIFE SATISFACTION!

This story is about an ordinary girl who begins her life with nothing more than fun to everything about satisfaction. I am a person with eyes full of dreams and heart full of love, but I am filled with flaws. All my first degree I lived my life so happily. Going to college, bunking classes with friends, watching movies a month, having long drives, I am not studious enough, but I am almost an average student where I lived my young life to the fullest without knowing what life really is. Dancing is my passion and we have our gang called only secrets. If we step on the floor, we won’t get down unless we grab the winning title. We completely cherished every second of it. Like everyone around the world, I too had a complicated love story like all teenagers do, but the pain was disgusting for me. I was matured to understand love is a part of life, but my heart doesn’t have the strength to accept heartbreak. That’s where everything started; I started to pen down my sufferings. Writing was the medium which I choose to express myself and it became my passion. I am not a great writer, I just pen all my pains, I nail them in my own way with alphabets what I know. My teeth’s are tired of smiling fake, but writing is the only place where my deep dark soul evokes. I scratched and scribbled all stupid stuffs because it was my only hope to heal myself. My wings were cut and my voices were muted, I was trapped inside a holy word SACRIFICE. If we want to achieve something sacrifices has to be made, isn’t it? I made some decisions in life which is hard for me to follow, but writing made me to hold them strong. I always pray God to give me strength to say NO to wrong things. That’s where most of them fail, we knew it’s not the right path, but we choose to run along it but we end up in misery. It is not always what we see or hear even our eyes are fooled by the heart. We have to be strong enough to take up our second chances of live. Writing was my second chance I don’t want to put them down. The emotions are real tricksters and this time it was fear which trapped me. Fear of achieving my desire, fear of losing my second chance, fear of heartbreak, but this time it was not a person, it was my passion. Writing became my passion and passion became my love. It was the very first time in my life I felt tears were worth enough to roll on my cheeks and my hands were proud enough to wipe it off. The more I feel that much fierce will be my ride. Once nights were haunted, but now even my sleepless nights became bliss, flipping pages and hearing those sounds became my night music.  It’s all about me, only me because we have to understand that we are responsible for our own actions. Learning from your flaws is positivity, but upgrading it to the next step is all you must do. According to me consistent actions are the only key to success. If we keep on working hard without any interruption one day our hard works will be answered. Any good action is rewarded, maybe not now, but it will be honored when the right time comes. Coming to this state of mind was not that much easier, I pick my circle I make all the resolutions of who am I going to be and break it one by one. I am still working on my progress, but as I said before feelings and emotions are tricksters in life. I get connected with people easily and get detached than a lighting does. But I even make those flaws into my writings. So all I dream is not to give up writing. It is not about success, it is all about LIFE SATISFACTION.
